Fedrick Lord Leighton Captive Andromache 1986-88
There are many things in life that are not only unpleasant to others but can become a barrier when seeking to make friendship with others. Everyone who desires a good friend, admire some basic qualities such as modesty and sincerity in others. It is the intention of most if not all to strive to make life a beautiful song, however not many have succeeded. It is important to cultivate good habits if we intend to make this a reality in our lives.

The overall process of converting food into chemical substances that can be absorbed and assimilated into the blood stream is called digestion. This process begins in the mouth, as the food is chewed, it is mixed with the saliva, which moistens it, and supplies it with enzymes that breakes it down.

Many suffer from digestive disorders, which could vary from the onset of symptoms which reflect a normal response to an unusual meal, or some factors of their lifestyle, an improper diet or just dealing with the daily stresses of life. TREASURY OF THOUGHTS

The older we become the more easily it is to see that our thoughts does affect our behaviour. For our thought is a reflection of who we are, which is then expressed by our attitude to each other. The way we respond to the various challenges that life throws our way will determine the quality of life we enjoy. It is therefore important that we cherish no idle or unpleasant thought as this will impact on our relationship with others as well as our happiness, success or failure.

ADMISSION

 A man
Isn't it funny how we always have the answers after we have messed up? After we have spent our years saving time only to spend it in folly! Everyone knows that life is a challenge as well as a mystery, one which we cannot comprehend and that is why we often find ourself making terrible mistakes some of which are so difficult to erase.

THE VALUE OF A FRIEND

A good friend stick closer than a brother, often when things go wrong as they do with everyone; we allow sadness to envelop us plunging us into a state of discouragement; it is times like these when we realize the value of true friendship.

Most folks can attest to the fact that the number of friends is not as plentiful as they should be in times of distress and trouble; in times of crisis when they are most wanted they are usually never found.

GOLD: GOING FOR GOLD

In the race of life all run to win a prize, that special kind of achievement that make our lives worthwhile.  In the week that has passed we have seen the thrill of victory of so many who have worked hard and have been rewarded. Many have cried tears of joy just having their dreams realized and the bonus of winning a medal. Without a doubt we all know that many sacrifices have been made in order for these athletes to be there, while some may be disappointed that they have not won a medal they should still be happy that they were privileged to be a part of such a wonderful experience.

THE PARADOX OF TIME

Time
Time – I say this—and know it to be true.  Upon this little word, time hang all our joys and sorrows. Our reality, our circumstances, glooms or gladness, this is our portion the glorious light of truth.

Time you have the power to make or mar our life; the sting of death no one can deny; the agony of losing a loved one none can describe. Yet while hope lingers you procrastinate. When the grey hairs become many, the desires no longer stirred, while we become invisible and some go to their eternal home the cycle of life continues.

CANCER AND HEALING FOODS

Cancer what is it? “Cancer is the general name for a group of more than 100 diseases. All cancers start because abnormal cells grow out of control.” If left untreated serious illness or even death can be the result.  http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerBasics/what-is-cancer

Fresh fruits and vegetables are the recommended source of food that will guard us against cancer. We should strive to eat as much of these as possible to maintain our health and aid our body in the fight against this terrible disease.

The Brazilian nuts, oats, and brown rice are some of the best sources of selenium; this is known to reduce the incidence of lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers.

Onions and Garlic are also very good in the fight of this deadly disease as it contains sulfur compounds that are able to stimulate the immune system natural defenses. This also has the ability to potentially reduce tumor growth. Garlic has been suggested by some studies to reduce stomach cancer.

Brussels Sprouts – is recommended as a cancer-fighting agent as it has a high amount of bioflavonoids and indoles, plant chemicals that protect against cancer. Other studies have indicated that the bioflavonoids and indoles may protect us against cancer of the prostate and uterus.

Tomatoes and Tomato products excellent food to aid the fight of cancer as they contain lycopene. Preliminary research has shown consumption of tomatoes can lower cancer risk, as a result of the presence of lycopene, which has been considered a potential agent for prevention of some types of cancers.
Cabbage – another food source suggested in the prevention of this terrible disease.  It has been noted that people who consume a large amount of this food, a low rate of colon cancer has been found.

If ever a time when the diet should be simple it is now. In a country like this where fruits, nuts, and vegetables are in abundance, why should we consume so much of the flesh of dead animals for food?  We know the use of fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts can and does contribute to a wholesome healthy diet.

We should strive to eat of the foods that will not depreciate the blood.  An impoverished diet, or poor quality of food, cooked in an improper manner, cannot make good blood. We are composed of what we eat, A variety of simple dishes, perfectly healthful and nourishing, should be our choice.

LOVE DOES NOT BOAST

a  heart
There is a habit which we have yet to overcome, one that can be very annoying.

It is the disposition of many to talk about themselves or problems encountered on a daily basis.

There is another habit we have to strive also to overcome and it is selfishness. We can become so consumed with self to the exclusion of others and their problems.

I do not think that those who participate in this habit are aware of how irritating it can be to others. This displays our weakness and can be a very unpleasant way to gain attention.

WHAT IS LIFE?

Nature

Since the beginning of time, the question of life has always been the favorite theme of man.

For many, life (as far as they are concerned) consists of who they spend it with; without a partner, there is no life just a mere existence. Hence the absence of that loved one is considered anguish. Live not to exist.

FOODS: EATING TO LIVE? OR LIVING TO EAT?

Like everyone else, we all strive to obtain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. There is no doubt that diet plays a critical role in both our health and development.
As we examine one of the ways we prepare our meals and the virtues of the use of certain food may we be in a better position to maintain our health.

BARBECUE – A very popular mode of cooking, however, care needs to be taken when using this method, as cancer-causing substances are formed when the fat from the meat drips onto the hot coals, causing a deposit onto the food through the smoke. Exposure can be minimized by partially cooking these foods either by baking or parboiling.
Care – covering the barbecue bars with punctured aluminum foils before cooking will protect the food from the smoke and fire.

LEGUMES – an excellent source of protein is very useful in the diet; because of the rich content source of fiber found in beans and pulses the stomach is filled quite quickly, as you receive your supply of energy.

BROCCOLI - rich in vitamin c and beta carotene, possessing potassium and other minerals is an excellent cancer-fighting agency. Broccoli can be eaten raw however steaming and stir-frying will help to retain the most nutrients of this wonderful vegetable.

STEVIA  - a South American herb used as a natural sweetener for centuries;  A natural alternative for sugar and artificial sweetener.  It has zero calories and zero carbs. It is 25-30 times sweeter than sugar. http://www.stevia.com/

PASTA – mood food, because of the presence of serotonin, carbohydrates like kinds of pasta gives you a very good feeling; a useful source of iron and vitamin that will prove beneficial to the body.

May we deny our appetites of the things that will prove injurious to us; let us preserve a good physical constitution, which will help us not just mentally but morally.  Choosing carefully those foods that best supply the elements needed for building up the body; eating healthy foods only serves to give us the best quality of blood. The good news is it is in the power of our hands to take care of ourselves by eating well.

There is no difficulty, however great, but will yield a rich harvest when we practice a healthy lifestyle. Not until we have gone deeply and searchingly at changing the old way and making way for the new will we be able to maintain that healthy life. Many bad habits we will have to overcome but if we persevere we will be richly rewarded. As we strive to direct and make re-adjustments we will experience that transforming life with each passing day.

To stand face to face with truth, and be able to embrace it, is the first step to victory. Such is our divine destiny, such should be our glorious goal; we can only begin to enjoy our optimal health when we cease to whine. As we adapt our minds to our condition and what we ought to do we then begin to build and discover the hidden power and possibilities within us!  Let us seize the opportunity today.

WHAT IS BEAUTY? – HOW DOES FOOD HELP?

What is beauty? The beauty industry makes millions each year as thousands strive to maintain, or hang on to their youthfulness. The battle of the bulges continue to rage on.

The dictionary gives several definition for beauty but the one I prefer is “The combination of all the qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and please the mind.”

Countless as a result of their misguided understanding of beauty rob themselves of health and vigour in the race to become thin or through expensive plastic surgery to change; add or remove some elements that they think will enhance their beauty.

TOP FIVE ANTIOXIDANT: IN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

It is recommended that we eat well, therefore we owe it to ourselves to eat well or it will tell. Did you know that the vast majority of us know that there are foods that kill and foods that restore yet we adopt an attitude of carelessness as it relates to our well being until that visit to the  doctor and we hear those dreaded words spoken to us…You are dying…

Many act as if the more you eat is the longer you live, this is not true; scientist have proven a very low calorie lifestyle actually extend life. In addition restricting calories not only delays ageing but even reverses some of its consequences. None need to compromise health in order to cut calories; care should be taken to ensure we have balanced meals. It is cheaper to eat well than to lose weight; and eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables will help us  consume fewer calories which eventually will play a key role in managing our weight.

fruit-salad
Fruits – why is it so essential for us to eat more of this? Research has shown that many diseases such as cancer and heart disease can be prevented or the risk lowered as a result of the consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Prunes and prune juices contain dietary fibres which are excellent home remedies for constipation, also a rich source of antioxidant which prevents the destruction of healthy cells, by interacting and stabilizing free radicals preventing the damage they may cause. The other fruits that are numbered among the top five (5) are raisins, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.

The top five (5) vegetables listed are Kale, Spinach, Brussels sprouts, Broccoli and Beetroot These vegetables will sustain health and provide us with adequate amount of antioxidant to help us in the fight of life. Kale an excellent source of beta carotene and vitamin c, good source of folate, calcium, iron and vitamin B6; it also contains bioflavonoids and other substances that protect against cancer.

So closely is health related to our happiness, that we cannot have one without the other. How few know anything about the structure and functions of their own bodies. Many are drifting about without knowledge, as to the proper care of our bodies, like a ship at sea without compass or anchor; sadly some are not interested to learn how to keep their bodies in a healthy condition and prevent disease. As research continues to identify these antioxidant phyto-chemicals in our food; and we exercise and strengthen our muscles; as our appetite improves may we continue to eat well of those foods that will bring healing to our bodies and make us happier people.

FOOD: THE SECRET OF FOODS THAT RESTORES

Food is not only eaten for satisfaction but it is used in the healing process of mind and body. We can choose to eat the foods that heal or we can choose to eat that which harms, whatever our choice we should be prepared for the consequence.

Have you noticed how the question of depression seems to be a topic no one can overlook? Or how the young seems to be having this malady thrusts upon them? Depression what is it? For centuries many famous people have been plagued by this terrible illness, no one is exempt from the problem of depression.

Depression is defined as a state of feeling sad; dejection. It is also described as a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, with a significant decrease or increase in appetite and time spent sleeping; a feeling of hopelessness and sometimes suicidal tendency.

Sir Winston Churchill refers to it as the “black dog.” As he often had bouts of paralysing depression. Clinical depression however is different and the sufferers can benefit from medications. Let us make the distinction between clinical depression from the normal feelings due to disappointment which disappear as fast and mysteriously as it came.

Statistics show that older people are more prone to depression than younger people though the symptoms are not as easily diagnosed among the elderly as they do not always exhibit the classic signs.

It is therefore imperative that we pay attention to our health by ensuring we eat the foods that are essential for a healthy mind as eating the right food can actually help to stabilise mood.

Here are lists of things that are recommended to ensure we keep our mind healthy:-
A balanced diet is suggested along with oily fish and food sources of vitamin B6 and B12; Linseeds, rapeseed oil and walnuts are other sources of omega -3 fatty acids. Also making sure there is not a lack of folic acid in the diet. Avoiding stimulants like caffeine which can interfere with sleep and mood.  As well as alcohol this can be a depressant.

As you limit your sugar consumption and consume more whole grains, bananas, potatoes, getting enough folate from the green leafy vegetables; not forgetting your orange juice,  while making sure you eat your asparagus, lentils, corn, peas and seeds. Note Asparagus contains purines, which are substances that promote the over production of uric acid therefore gout sufferers should consume this in moderation.

Water, so much can be said about it; here we see the importance of drinking plenty of this wonderful liquid as we strive to live a healthy life; may we continue to pay attention to details as it relates to our health and above all keep a healthy attitude.

BLOW: WHAT HAND HAS LIFE DEALT YOU?

Henri_Rousseau_
Many will say, “I have no faith.” It is true faith definitely has to be tested before it can be trusted. In life we experience many difficulties, and it can sometimes come upon us like a raging sea, a smouldering heat an erupting volcano. In whatever way we experience these difficult situations we should not allow them to make us become bitter.

CHILDREN: ARE THEY THE PRODUCT OR THE CAUSE?

Elisabeth Louise Vigée-Le Brun
Have you ever heard this being said? “Children must be seen and not heard?” Just the very thought makes me sick.  Is it any wonder why the private opinions sown in the mind of the children soon become its public opinion?

We should develop the skill to listen to our children. As it is their values that will govern our world, even their manners often times are but the response of their homes.

TOP DIET FOODS: TO TRANSFORM YOUR DIET PROGRAM

Many have inquired what diet foods can I take to preserve my health? Diet in recent times has become a much talked about topic, a source of concern as we are living longer. We see a number of diseases on the increase, namely, obesity, diabetes, heart conditions and various forms of cancer on the rise. Gone are the days when these diseases were only found among the aged. Today even the very young are being challenged with these diseases. We can all do something about this, by paying close attention to our diet; as special care to our dietary need is critical to our welfare.

Fruit Basket
One of the most reliable ways that have been proven in dieting is consistency in our eating routine.

WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?

Forgiveness is defined as granting pardon or remission for an offence or debt. Once you have extended  forgiveness there can be no resentment.

For as long as we are here everyone at some time, in some place will find the need to forgive someone or to be forgiven by someone. The art of forgiveness I believe is an acquired one in that you do not naturally have the ability to forgive others. This is evident among children, as you watch them be it at play or otherwise you will see their reluctance in saying the three simple words “I am sorry”.  Often you will find that this is the hardest thing for them to do. However if you manage to have them repeat the words I am sorry to those they have hurt you will find it becomes easier the second time around until there is no need for you to remind them to do so.

LOVE LETTER

Dear God,
Today I thought about you and wondered if you cared. I then called out to you to enquire were you there? Are you willing to answer all my questionings?  You responded, with this love letter that really thrills my soul.

"My Child, I love you, you are my very special friend; and this is a sample of my love for you.  Whoever touches you, touch the apple of my eyes. I rolled around the sun to shine on you today, to keep you warm and to light your path. I spread out the clouds to bring you the rain, while I shelter you from the powerful  lightening...Which if not controlled would utterly obliterate all my creations. The sky was my canvass to paint the different colours of the rainbow, demonstrating my everlasting promise I made to you. Every breath I take gives you light; that your beautiful feet may never falter. The distance in space is so immeasurable, to attempt to measure the distance you would need a "space ruler" and call it light years; which would be equivalent to the distance at which light travels,  yet I am just a breath away.

DIARY OF CREATION

Glimpses of God's intelligent design as He spoke the world into existence; "By the word of the Lord the heavens and the earth were created." Psalm 33:6,9. He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed forever, so all the host of them by the breath of his mouth came forth. Here we see creation design in action, step by step; the awesome greatness of a creator God.

WHAT IS IN MY DRINK?

Glasses of wine

Anything that has the potential to harm my health I will avoid. I wonder how many of us can safely say this, and really mean it?  The habit of social drinking has become the norm for many; as a result we see the effects of its use. It now seems to be a demon that cannot be shaken off.

RAISING HAPPY CHILDREN

Watts marie fox 1854 by George Frederic Watts
The home is the first school of the child. The education of each child should begin here; parents should teach their children to be kind as well as patient. Teach them to be thoughtful of others. Make your home to be a school where the children are shaped in character polished after the likeness of a palace.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?

We are told to begin well, for mistakes are often fatal! To begin well is to start at the right place. Where is the right place? Many will ask the question; however we were all created with a conscience, which tells us when we are doing something that will hurt us. We know that it is wrong to hate others, we know we should not steal, we know that it is right to be respectful to others and so as we look in to the requirements of the Law of God we find some basic principles which if rightly followed can provide a compass for our journey through this life.

WISDOM: TRUE GREATNESS/LEST WE FORGET

There are periods in our existence when there comes a time for the need of affirmation. Wisdom therefore should be sought at all times. True greatness is seen in those who possess this quality. Consequently it is important for us  during these Interludes of our lives when we have to brighten the corners where we are. Ah! forget the attitudes of others, and focus on your condition. For as the clay is moulded and fashioned in the hands of the potter; so should your life be transformed in spite of the clutter of life’s situation.

SOBRIETY - THE MIND

Bear in mind that the mind is the citadel of the man; however many folks wrestle with the idea that man was not created but that he evolved, the more I investigate this view the more I doubt the truth of it.  for it is evident that the construction of the human body, especially your mind, could not have come about as a result of a bang, but by an intelligent designer.

The mere design of the human body tells a story; the average human scalp has about 100,000 hairs, each square inch of the human skin consist of twenty feet of blood vessels, every tongue has a unique tongue print, everyone a unique finger print, the left lung is smaller than the right lung to make room for the heart; even the way we treat the body, to the extent that a person will sooner die from total lack of sleep than from starvation. Death will occur 10 days without sleep while starvation takes a few weeks. To devote one’s life to the study of this human machinery would take the work of a life time and so when you look at this unique creation you see that nothing can evolve and work with such careful precision.

WOULDN'T IT BE LOVELY!........

Sunset -girl gazing
Human life, when truly lived, is uncomplicated and truly wonderful. Lovely is defined as inspiring love, or having beauty that appeals to the emotion as well as the eye. As we live each day may we strengthen our  personality; each day may we open our hearts to love and be loved.

Be assured that with each day comes a new dawn in time; bringing about new beginnings and new promises. A day in which we can decide to live to inspire someone to be the best they can be. A day when we do lovely things in order to make someone happy. With this action we can gain fresh hopes and new opportunities. For you it can be the day of a rekindling of high aspirations, bright friendship and wonderful fellowship with those you love.  A new start from your old past with its misunderstandings and incorrect decisions; a saddening burden. Inspite of this you can rise to become new.

CHOICES: WHAT WILL BE YOUR FIRST CHOICE?

The way of life; the way of death – the choice we make with the opportunity given; to walk with our heads in the clouds or to walk in the sunshine; an old action a new action one must pass away before the other can appear. What will our first choice be?

REFLECTIONS

Horace_Weston_Taylor_-_Contemplation,_1919
The road to information must be one of the most amazing and enjoyable places to travel. The achievement of its gifts ever increasing.

There are many ways in which we can improve ourselves, often we focus on the exterior thinking that if I look my best then I am indeed a good person. We should realize that the outward appearance though important is not the measure of the man; and as we reflect on these things may we take painstaking effort to improve ourselves as we seek to make the world around us a better place to be. Every action must bring its reward of either good or evil.

THE POWER OF SPEECH

We have it in our power to make a differnce in the llives of others, therefore we are obligated to be careful of our actions and the impact it has on the lives of others. Watch your lips, watch your lips what they say, la la la la la la la la la …do you remember these words? We have all been taught this beautiful song when we were a child and we sang it with such innocence. However as we grow older this seems to be forgotten and many think it does not matter what words we use.

WHAT IF - DAY OF JUDGEMENT

What if ….there is a grand and sombre day ahead of us where our lives will be reviewed?
